Shelter has released its annual report for the last financial year, 2010/11. It explains how donations, contracts and fundraising activities have helped pay for Shelter’s services and campaigns.

The report also looks at the range of work the organisation has carried out over the last 12 months, including:
- providing support to more than 1,000 children through giving housing advice to child care professionals working with them
- providing advice to 35,895 people on their tenancy – helping people to avoid eviction, deal with landlord disputes and understand their rights in the private rental sector
- helping to save 194,000 people from the danger of losing their home, by lobbying the Government on their plans to slash housing benefit by 10% if people didn’t find work within 12 months.
However, the report also reflects the difficulties of the last year, as the recession has started to take effect. During this time, unemployment and the costs of living have risen, and the housing crisis has deepened – increasing demand on Shelter’s services.
As Shelter’s Chief Executive, Campbell Robb, explains in his introduction, times are likely to get even harder in the future.
“When the coalition UK Government came to power in May 2010, no one could have predicted the scale and speed with which cuts to public spending would directly impact housing.
The planned changes to housing benefit to funding for welfare advice and affordable house building will mean that for thousands of people it will be harder to pay their rent, keep up with mortgage payments or find a decent home for their families.”
