In the first case, Adeola Wasiu Banwo, of Longfellow Road, Wyken, admitted leaving various items including a sofa on Villiers Street, Stoke.

It was spotted by patrolling wardens and officers from the Environmental Crime Unit traced the fly tipping to Mr Banwo.

The 53-year-old claimed he had placed the items on the highway as he had moved out of his house. He said that his landlord had told him to place the items there but this was denied by the landlord.

At Coventry Magistrates Mr Banwo was given a 12 month conditional discharge and fined £637 costs.

In a separate incident Peter Speed, of Highfield Road, Hillfields, pleaded guilty to fly-tipping.

An Environmental Crime officer discovered a variety of items including a sofa and chairs on Highfield Road and linked the items to Mr Speed.

The 42-year-old later admitted to officers that he had instructed a friend to gather items from the communal entry, put them in his garden and then later dump them on the pavement.

He was given a 12 month conditional discharge and fined £488 costs.

Joy Adams, Principal Officer in Coventry City Council’s Environmental Crime Unit said fly tipping would not be tolerated.

He said: “Everyone has a duty of care to make sure that any waste they dispose of goes to a licensed waste site.

“If you pay for someone to remove waste residents should check whether they hold a waste carriers licence and ask for a waste transfer note to confirm they have taken the waste.

“If you employ some who you don’t know and they don’t give you any details it is highly likely that your waste will be fly tipped and you could be held responsible.”

Residents can check whether a company has a waste carriers license by contacting the Environment Agency 08708 506 506 or by visiting their website www.environment-agency.gov.uk.
