Amin Rahman, from the Grill Garden, Katherine Road, Forest Gate, was convicted of two offences under the Health Act at Thames Magistrates’ Court on February 6. Costs of £991 and a victim surcharge of £120 were also awarded to the council against him.

Newham Council enforcement officers had raided the Grill Garden and discovered 67 people in a large enclosed marquee at the back of the premises. Most of them were puffing away at shisha pipes.

It is against the law to smoke tobacco or any other substance including shisha flavours in any public enclosed room or building. Rahamn continued to flout the law despite being warned twice by the council.

Newham Council’s Cllr Ian Corbett, executive member for infrastructure and environment, said: “This sends a clear, strong message to other illegal shisha operators. We will never accept crime or anti-social behaviour in any shape or form.”
