A gas fitter and his employer have been sentenced over a spate of installation and registration issues.

Anthony Trevor Hughes, 47, of Gwalchmai, Anglesey, had falsely claimed to have been registered with CORGI, which was then the approved gas safety scheme. His employee Justin Shane Owen, 37, of Llynfaes, Anglesey, had made basic errors while installing gas appliances and pipe work at three separate properties.

The work was carried out between December 2006 and March 2007 in Bangor and Anglesey, with people living in two of the homes having their safety compromised after Owen’s work triggered gas leaks. He installed a flue terminal upside down at one of the properties, doing the same with an autochangeover unit at another.

Hughes admitted five breaches of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 at Caernarfon Magistrates’ Court. He was fined £2,625 with costs of £7,500.

Owen, who was in court for sentencing, had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing at Holyhead Magistrates’ Court. He was fined £900 for nine breaches. But as he is currently in custody for other unrelated offences, he will instead serve 28 days’ detention.
