Ten primary schools in Stirlingshire, Scotland have failed food hygiene checks in the past year, it has emerged.

The Stirling Observer reported that the results came as part of the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) Food Hygiene Information Scheme, which also rates restaurants and takeaways.

However, several other local businesses have complained they have been wrongly listed as having failed hygiene checks on the scheme’s website, when they were actually in compliance.

The FSA lists the schools, along with many other restaurants, as “improvement required”. It states this means they “have not achieved an acceptable level of compliance with the requirements of food hygiene law”.

Reasons for failure can often be problems like chipped paint and cracked work surfaces, but no information has been made public on why each premises failed.

The website, which launched in early April and is promoted by Stirling Council, was updated with data from the council’s environmental health department.
