An aerospace firm has been fined £14,000 after a worker suffered severe and permanent hand and wrist injuries.
Overview
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) reported that the 53-year-old worker from Loughborough, who has asked not to be named, had been making aircraft components and was in the process of removing a round mould without handles from the press.
As he did so, the bottom part of the hydraulic press (known as a platen) moved up, trapping his hand.
He was hospitalised for several weeks and has not been able to return to work.
The worker had to have three fingers and his thumb amputated after his left hand was crushed in a cooling press at Meggitt Aerospace’s site in Ashby Road, Shepshed, on 10 May last year.
Outcome
The HSE prosecuted Meggitt Aerospace Ltd, of Atlantic House, Aviation Park West, Bournemouth International Airport, Christchurch, Dorset. The company pleaded guilty to breaching section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. The company was fined £14,000 and ordered to pay full costs of £6,758.
