An eagle-eyed Police Community Safety Officer who spotted large plumes of dark smoke rising from an industrial estate landed a caravan dealership in court on Monday.

Coast to Coast Caravans Limited of Main Road, Waterston, was fined £2,000 after admitting an offence under the Clean Air Act.

The court heard that after spotting the smoke on 9th December last year, the PCSO – accompanied by a pollution control officer from Pembrokeshire County Council – visited Waterston industrial estate.

They observed the remains of a large pile of ash and burnt remains within the company’s compound Materials mixed in with the ash included carpets, metal springs, black bags and food waste.

Several skips were also present on site.

Coast to Coast Caravans was also ordered to pay £543.32 costs plus a victim surcharge of £15.

The prosecution was brought by the Public Protection division of Pembrokeshire County Council.

After the case, the Authority’s Cabinet Member for Environmental and Regulatory Services, Councillor Ken Rowlands, said that officers from Dyfed-Powys Police together with the County Council’s Public Protection Division officers had worked together to achieve a successful result.

He added: “This should serve as a warning and discourage businesses from burning waste on site. It is incumbent on them to find legal methods to dispose of waste material.”
