Samraat Tandoori owner, Hemayet Hussain who runs the Indian restaurant at 16 High Street, Wickford, was found guilty and was fined £250 for each of the nine offences, £1370 in costs and a £15 victim surcharge, totalling £3,635.

Basildon Council’s Environmental Health Officers visited the premises and found a lack of food hygiene training and written food safety management system. Dirty conditions were found affecting both structure and equipment in the kitchen, storage rooms, surfaces, (particularly the walls) were in a poor condition making them difficult to keep clean.

Officers found that there was a failure to protect food from contamination and high risk foods were not being stored at a safe temperature. The conditions presented a serious risk to public safety.

Cllr Richard Moore, cabinet member for planning (and with responsibility for food safety), said: “Our environmental health officers worked with Mr Hussain to help comply with food safety legislation and he had numerous warnings and chances to help him comply.

“I hope that the outcome of this case sends a clear message that Basildon Council will take action against those businesses that are prepared to put our residents at risk.

“It is important that residents and visitors to the Borough can choose and trust the places where food is prepared and sold.”

This latest action now brings the total number of prosecutions of food business operators since April last year to six, with another four businesses being subject to formal cautions.
