A successful prosecution has been taken by Three Rivers District Council following an investigation into an accident in which an employee fell on the staircase resulting in a major injury.

Superdrug Stores plc were fined on 4 May by West Hertfordshire Magistrates Court £4000 for each of two offences. Costs of £6,000 were awarded to the District Council.
Three Rivers’ Commercial Standards Manager, John Scott, said:
“If a risk assessment had been done properly it all might have been avoided. Advice is available on the Health and Safety Executive website.”
Superdrug Stores plc pleaded guilty to two offences under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
The two offences related to breaches of:
- Regulation 12(5) of the Workplace Regulations (failure to provide suitable and sufficient handrails to a staircase)
- Regulation 3(1) of the Management Regulations (failure to make a suitable and sufficient risk assessment)
