Altremis has launched an innovative mobile phone app to help organisations improve safety in the workplace.  SARA, or Simple Accident Reporting App, is one of the world’s first apps to be specifically designed to identify safety risks and reduce the number of employee injuries and deaths.

In the UK alone, an estimated 600,000 accidents occur each year. A quarter of the people hurt will need to take seven days or more off work as a result and up to 200 will die from their injuries.  Research shows that organisations which report and investigate near misses can dramatically cut the number of accidents, simply by identifying problems and proactively removing hazards.

Co-founder and Altremis Director George Forrest said, ‘We work with a wide range of organisations to improve their operational processes, and it’s clear that opportunities to improve safety are being missed.  Many companies feel it will cost too much to implement a formal reporting system, so we wanted to develop an easy and cost effective solution to help overcome this issue. With one in three people owning a smartphone, it made sense to use the technology available and develop an app.’

SARA works on iPhones and it allows users to complete and submit a near miss or accident report in minutes.  Video, photos and recorded voice notes can be added to the report, any injuries can be highlighted at a touch of the screen, and the app can also pinpoint the exact location of the incident using GPS.  Reports are then sent to a user defined company email addresses.  Data from the reports can also be integrated with Safety, Health & Environment databases, making the investigation and follow up much easier and quicker for management.

Mr Forrest added, ‘SARA could potentially revolutionise the way near misses are reported and managed in the future, and hopefully it will also help cut the number of accidents in the workplace.

‘The app is particularly effective for companies with mobile workers.  We’ve already had interest from train operators who can see the benefit of being able to receive instant reports on incidents involving employees or even passengers.  It means they can respond faster and it will help them to provide a coordinated approach to safety.’

The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store here for just £1.49. SARA will be launched on the Android platform in the near future.
