Kawa Abdullah pleaded guilty to eight food hygiene offences at North Somerset Magistrates Court yesterday (Tuesday 23 April).

The court was told that officers from North Somerset Council’s Food and Safety team carried out an inspection of the kebab shop in July last year following notification of a food poisoning case linked to the premises.

The inspection revealed that the business had no procedures in place or documentation to ensure the safe preparation of food. There were defects in relation to the structure of the food preparation areas, including the lack of proper hand washing facilities.

Officers also found that articles and equipment which came into contact with food were not adequately cleaned and disinfected, that food was not protected from the risk of contamination and that cleaning agents were stored in amongst food items. The food business operator also failed to register with the council or to provide proper food safety training to his staff or to properly supervise them in food safety matters.

The magistrates fined the food business operator £1,000 and ordered him to pay costs of a further £1,000 and a victim surcharge of £15.

The council’s executive member whose portfolio includes food and safety, Cllr Peter Bryant, said: “Our Food and Safety team works with food businesses to ensure that hygiene standards are maintained. However, it will not hesitate to take legal action when there are serious breaches of food safety, and especially when these breaches are detrimental to people’s health.

“Officers from the Food and Safety team have continued to work with the food business operator and the kebab shop is now operating in compliance with food safety legislation.”
