Abbas Salami, owner of The Flying Pizza on Woodfield Road in Morriston, recently appeared in Swansea Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to nine food hygiene offences.
He was fined £250 for each offence totalling £2,250. He was also ordered to pay £2,000 towards costs.
The case followed an inspection by Swansea Council Food & Safety Officers in November 2012.
The inspection uncovered a long list of problems, including:
- A rusted chest freezer contaminated with food debris
- A dirty pizza conveyor oven covered in grease
- Filthy main kitchen floors covered in food debris; and
- A dough roller used to prepare pizza bases encrusted with food debris.
The restaurant was also closed following the inspection because of a lack of hot running water on the premises. The business was allowed to reopen once hot water was reinstated.
Martin Saville, Head of Public Protection at Swansea Council, said: “Our Food & Safety Officers work tirelessly to promote the importance of food hygiene to local businesses and to ensure they comply with food hygiene legislation.
“If businesses choose to ignore our advice and do not take appropriate steps to protect the safety of their customers, we will not hesitate to take formal action through the courts, as we have done in this particular case.”
All food-related businesses in Swansea are inspected regularly by Swansea Council. The results of the inspection, including a food hygiene rating, are then published on the web so the public can find out how clean those businesses are.
The rating system was introduced by the Food Standards Agency in October 2010 in Wales and scores businesses a rating of 0 – 5. From November this year, all food-related businesses that have been inspected and issued with a rating will be required to display it on the premises for the public to see.
In Swansea, more than 1,200 food businesses, including restaurants, takeaways and cafes, are included on the dedicated website.
