Swansea Council issued the warning after the owner of the Tasty Takeaway at 1 Norfolk Street, Mount Pleasant, was hit with fines, costs and charges of almost £4,000.

Takeaway owner Mr Daniel Yeung pleaded guilty to nine offences under the Food Hygiene (Wales) Regualtions 2006. He was fined £250 for each offence. Costs of £1,500 were awarded as well as a victim surcharge of £225.

The offences included failing to keep his food premises clean and in good repair. Images used in court as evidence highlighted dirty floors covered in thick grease and mould growing on food storage boxes.

Cllr June Burtonshaw, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Place, said: “Swansea Council works very hard with local high risk food businesses and we carry out inspections to protect the public.

“Customers expect a decent standard of food hygiene from takeaways, restaurants and other food businesses so they can be reassured that what they’re buying won’t make them ill.

“Hopefully this latest case will send out a strong message to other businesses in Swansea that provide food that we will act if hygiene levels are not at an acceptable level.”

The Court heard that Mr Yeung had a poor history of compliance with food hygiene and had failed to act on a number of improvement notices issued to him. His business only managed to achieve 1 out of 5 after inspections were completed in 2011 and 2012. His business was inspected in March 2013 and he dropped to the lowest score of 0 out of 5.

All food related businesses in Swansea are provided with a rating following an inspection. The ratings range from 0 to 5. Later this month, businesses will have to display their rating on their premises for the public to see.
