On 10 April, Luton Magistrates Court heard how an employee of Barclays Bank in George Street in Luton used a flammable air duster on hot equipment to try to clear a jam. During a flashback, she badly burnt her face and arms.

The company was charged and pleaded guilty to an offence under Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work at Act 1974 for failing to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of their employees by allowing use of the wrong air duster.

After careful consideration, Magistrates fined Barclays Bank Plc £12,000, plus £1,892.23 towards Council costs and a £120 victim surcharge – a total of £14,011.

Hittess Vaghela, Team Manager (Food and Safety) from the Council, said: “Local businesses must remember their legal duties under health and safety legislation. The law is there to protect employees and the public. The Council will not hesitate to take enforcement action if serious health and safety breaches are taking place.”
