A landlord with several multi-occupied properties in Leeds has been fined for disregarding tenant safety.

Mr Henry from Kirk Hammerton in York, appeared in Leeds Magistrates Court on Thursday 24 January where he was found guilty and ordered to pay £8,400 in fines and £5,000 towards costs to the council.
The offences related to seven licensed houses in multiple occupation in the Roundhay, Moortown and Woodhouse areas of Leeds. Mr Henry failed to provide gas safety and electrical safety certificates after numerous requests for all properties and he also failed to comply with HMO licence conditions relating to fire safety on six of the properties
Councillor Peter Gruen, Leeds City Council executive board member with responsibility for neighbourhoods, housing and support services said:
“Failure to comply with licence conditions on a number of rented properties across the city is simply not acceptable.
“This landlord refused to provide the council with the information we require after numerous requests and therefore has had to pay a substantial fine.
“The council rigorously checks that landlords across the city adhere to the rules and licence conditions in place and we take enforcement action seriously in any case where it appears a landlord has disregarded these.”
Further Information
Mr Henry was previously prosecuted by the council in March 2011 for operating two licensable HMOs without licences.
