Oxford City Council’s Environmental Health Officers carried out the seizure of noise equipment at Sherwood Place in Barton and removed two sound systems comprising of 8 speakers and two sub woofers. A Samsung TV was also seized.

The multi-agency operation involved Thames Valley Police officers as well as the Council’s Environmental Health, Community Response and Anti-social Behaviour Investigation Teams.

Councillor John Tanner, Board Member for a Cleaner, Greener Oxford, says: “The operation was carried out in response to repeated complaints from neighbours about noise and anti-social behaviour from the house.

“It was another successful operation between the Council and Thames Valley Police to tackle neighbourhood noise problems.

“I am only sorry that we had to seize this equipment but we are determined to restore some peace and quiet to the local community.”

A total of 26 complaints were received by Oxford City Council and Thames Valley Police. Noise Abatement Notices were served on the occupiers requiring them to cease creating a nuisance. These were ignored and a complaint was received the same day they were served.

Further evidence of noise nuisance was obtained by the Environmental Development Out of Hours Service and complaints continued to be received.

A warrant was obtained from Oxford Magistrates’ Court for the Council’s Environmental Health Officers to enter the premises and remove any equipment that could create excessive noise.

Under noise nuisance legislation the Council also has the power to prosecute for breach of the abatement notices.
