A significant fine has been imposed on the previous owner of the Real China Express restaurant, in Queen Caroline Street, Hammersmith, due to poor standards of cleanliness and hygiene.

Hammersmith & Fulham (H&F) Council’s food safety team found last June (2012) the restaurant was operating in very poor conditions which led to an immediate emergency closure.
The director of the company, Song Qin, appeared at Hammersmith Magistrates Court on October 22 and pleaded guilty to all six offences. He was fined £3,600. In total, Qin was ordered to pay £6,721 including a contribution of £3,061 towards prosecution costs. A victim surcharge of £60 was also imposed.
The restaurant’s owners had failed to keep the restaurant clean and in good condition. They didn’t take adequate measures to control pests. Food handlers were not supervised or instructed properly in food hygiene matters, and the restaurant had not notified the team about a change in ownership. The owners were also not making sure that fittings and equipment were clean and adequately disinfected.
The Real China Express is now operating under a new company, so hungry residents can be assured that standards have improved.
H&F Council deputy leader Cllr Greg Smith said, “This restaurant was in a filthy condition. Customers’ health was put at risk because of the recklessness of the owners.
“The council will not stand by and allow this type of practice to continue. Fortunately, the Real China is now under new management, and we expect the new standards of cleanliness, pest control and staff training to be kept up. We will continue to inspect the premises to ensure standards are maintained.”
