Mr Jaweed Jawadi the food business operator of the West Hull Continental takeaway, 513 Hessle Road pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to comply with a hygiene improvement notice served on him by Environmental Health Officers and to a charge of failing to suitably train all food handlers.

The West Hull Continental trades as a takeaway selling pizzas, kebabs, burgers and other fast food.

Guilty pleas were entered by Mr Jawadi at the Hull Magistrates Court on the 28 February 2014. He was fined £110 for the breach offence and ordered to pay costs of £870 with a victim surcharge of £20. There was no seperate penalty for the other offence.

Speaking after the case Principal Environmental Health Officer Michael Fish said:

“It is unusual for food business operators not to comply with this basic legal requirement. Mr Jawadi ignored a warning letter following a routine inspection and it was necessary to serve a hygiene improvement notice requiring appropriate food hygiene training for the food business operator and his staff”.

“It is a fundamental requirement for all food handlers to be suitably trained, especially so for a takeaway shop selling high risk foods. Mr Jawadi’s failure to adhere to basic legal requirements resulted in his food hygiene rating of 0 out of 5 URGENT IMPROVEMENT NECESSARY and this prosecution case.”

Councillor Hewitt, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods and Communities said:

“All of the ratings issued by Hull City Council can be found at the Food Standard Agency’s website www.food.gov.uk/ratings and I urge members of the public to check this website before they dine out or order food. All of the ratings are a result of unannounced inspections by Environmental Health Officers and this is a national scheme operated in conjunction with the Food Standards Agency”
