A man from Weston-super-Mare has been ordered to pay thousands of pounds in costs and given a four week curfew after pleading guilty to flytipping.

In a successful prosecution brought by North Somerset Council, Gary Walburn (aged 47) from Sunnyside Road, was ordered to pay costs of £2,320 plus a victim surcharge of £60 and is subject to a curfew of four weeks during which he will be tagged and is not allowed to leave the house between 3pm-11pm. This followed his appearance at North Somerset Magistrates Court on Tuesday 1 April.
On 20 February last year, North Somerset Council’s environmental protection team received a report of fly tipped waste on land at ‘Huckers Bow’ car park, Woodspring Priory, land belonging to the National Trust. They started an investigation which in time led them to Gary Walburn. When interviewed under caution he admitted dumping one load of waste in the car park at Hucker’s Bow. He said that he had installed a new kitchen in a property in Worle and disposed of the old one.
Welcoming the result of the prosecution, North Somerset Council’s executive member whose portfolio includes the environment, Cllr Peter Bryant, said: “Fly tipping blights our surroundings. Once again I need to congratulate council officers for their investigation which has led to this man appearing before magistrates. People who offend society in this manner need to be named and shamed which may go some way to amend their way of life and provide a deterrent to others.”
