During a routine inspection in October 2013, the Borough Council’s Food Hygiene Inspectors found there was no effective  food labelling system in place, food past its use-by date had not been destroyed and staff had not checked the temperature of chilled and frozen food that morning.  The walk-in chiller contained defrosted salmon and prawns, cooked joints of beef and turkey, chilli and lasagne all past their use-by dates.

The Food Inspectors also found that freezer drawers were broken and held together with duct tape and frozen foods were stored in damaged and broken plastic containers, running the risk of food contamination.  Added to this, there were large quantities of venison, rabbits and pheasants with no invoice or delivery notes and so no evidence of a supplier.

Following the inspection, Mrs Huckvale received two Hygiene Improvement Notices and a follow-up visit revealed that the work had been carried out to a high standard.

Assistant Chief Executive and Solicitor to the Council, Steve Maxey said:

” There had been similar offences identified during previous inspections in 2008, 2010 and 2012 and whilst improvements were made at the time, Mrs Huckvale failed to maintain the standards required.  If she had followed the advice which our Food Hygiene Inspectors had provided, she could have avoided this prosecution.  As a result, the offences were a breach of the law, putting the health and wellbeing of customers at risk. “
