A landlord has been fined over £2450 for failing to maintain his licensed House in Multiple Occupation (HMO).

Asim Ali was prosecuted after Oxford City Council officers found that the licensed HMO he was renting out in Boundary Brook Road was in a poor state of disrepair.
HMO Enforcement Officers visited the property in September 2013 on a routine inspection to check on compliance with licence conditions and management regulations.
The officers found several contraventions to the Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation (England) Regulations 2006, including:
- Failure to display notices indicating the location of the means of escape from the building in case of fire
- No handrails or bannister necessary for the safety of the occupants on the stairs
- Not maintaining the common parts in good and clean decorative repair
- Inadequate light fittings to the common parts
- Failure to display notices with landlord’s details.
The landlord, who also lives in Boundary Brook Road, pleaded guilty to the offences when he appeared at Oxford Magistrates Court on Monday 19 May 2014
His solicitor showed the court photos to demonstrate the repair work that has been taking place within the property since the officers inspected.
For each of the five breaches the court imposed a fine of £300. In addition the court ordered Mr Ali to pay £950 towards the Council’s costs.
