Environmental Protection: £10,000 fine for causing pollution ‘more polluting that crude sewage’
A waste transfer station has been fined £10,000 for causing pollution described as ‘more polluting than crude sewage’.

Food Safety

Food Safety: Update on E. coli outbreak in Germany
The German authorities have reported 47 further cases of Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome (HUS) today, bringing the total number of cases to 689. In addition, 276 more cases of bloody diarrhoea (VTEC or EHEC infection, caused by E. coli O104) have been reported, bringing the total to 1,959.

Press release from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA): On 22 May 2011, Germany reported a significant increase in the number of patients with haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and bloody diarrhoea caused by Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC).
