The filthy conditions at A&N Pizza Fiesta, 233 Beverley Road, Hull has led to a fine of £3,000 and a further £615 related costs for its business operator Mr Soran Omar Tawfik. This was the result of a prosecution brought by Hull City Council’s EHO’s at Hull Magistrates Court on 23 September 2011.

Following a routine inspection for Hull City Council’s food safety scheme Scores on the Doors, Mr Tawfik voluntarily closed the premises. Scoring just 5 out of 100, A&N Pizza Fiesta rated an ‘E’ which is very poor. Criminal proceedings were brought for the following breaches of food hygiene regulations:
  • Failure to keep food premises clean and in a good state of repair and condition
  • Failure to keep food equipment clean and in a good state of repair and condition
  • No documented food safety management system
  • Food handlers were not suitably trained
  • Staff were not wearing suitable clean protective clothing
  • No adequate measures in place to control pests. (Mouse droppings were found in the food preparation areas)
  • Inappropriate food storage risked cross contamination from raw food to prepared food

Councillor John Hewitt, portfolio holder for CitySafe, said:

“Environmental health officers in Hull check over 2,500 food premises and the conditions at A&N Pizza Fiesta were among the worst found. Whilst we are happy to advise and support operators, conditions like this pose such a serious risk to public health that we had no option but to instigate criminal proceedings. Scores on the Doors certificates on display at food premises are good indication of hygiene standards and I urge the public to check.”
