The Northern Area Social Housing (NASH) Forum has published the first regional forecast for the impact of the Government’s radical new policy framework. The research looks at the need for investment and regeneration, as well as proposed future models to deliver housing, in the context of the Coalition’s localism policy. One of the main findings of the research claim that changes to housing benefit will provide an incentive for landlords to create HIMOs to accommodate smaller families. These families will be displaced from social housing because they have had housing benefit reduced as a result of under- occupation. Read the article here.

Two Coventry men have been fined after pleading guilty to separate fly-tipping incidents. Coventry City Council’s Environmental Crime Team successfully brought both prosecutions as part of the zero tolerance on the issue.

Food Safety

Food Safety: Former fast food restaurant manager guilty of hygiene breaches
The former owner and manager of a fast food restaurant in Southwark has pleaded guilty to a series of food safety offences after a cockroach was found in a takeaway Chinese meal ordered for a meeting of company directors.

Food Safety: £54,000 fine and ban for owners of ‘disgraceful’ restaurant
The owners of Peninsula Chinese Restaurant displayed a disregard for food hygiene. They have also been banned from running restaurants in the future after being prosecuted for the second time in two years by Greenwich Council.

Food Safety: Outbreak of Salmonella Newport
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is investigating an outbreak of a strain of Salmonella Newport infection among 30 people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland since the beginning of December 2011. Cases of illness caused by the same strain have been confirmed in Scotland, Ireland and Germany.

RPT Decision: HIMO Licence Appeal (CHI/00ML/HMV/2011/0004)

Respondent: Brighton & Hove City Council
Applicants: I.D. Habens and M.D. Habens
Subject Property: Top Maisonette, 121 Preston Road, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 6AF

The case involves an Appeal against a decision by Brighton & Hove City Council to attach a condition to the grant of a licence. This condition relates to the installation of a wash hand basin in the rear bedroom on the first floor.

The Southern Panel confirmed the decision by Brighton & Hove City Council.

RPT Decision: Improvement Notice Appeal (CAM/26UD/OLR/2011/0068)

Respondent: Stevenage Borough Council
Applicants: Alan Birfield
Subject Property: 31 Marymead Drive, Stevenage, Herts, SG2 8AA

This case involves an Appeal against an Improvement Notice made by Stevenage Borough Council. The Improvement Notice in this case were served whilst the property was still in occupation. Shortly before the hearing of the appeal, the property became vacant. As a result of this , the Local Authority revoked the Improvement Notice. The Appeal was then treated as withdrawn.
