Onur Akay and Haydar Yildiz of Kebabs R Us, at Picton Place, in Haverfordwest, pleaded guilty to three offences under the Food Hygiene (Wales) Regulations 2006 at the town’s Magistrates Court on 28th March.

The prosecution was brought by Pembrokeshire County Council

It followed a routine inspection of Kebabs R Us on the 8th February, 2011, and subsequent follow-up visits on the following three consecutive days by environmental health officers of the Council’s Public Protection Division.

During the inspection and follow-up visits, officers discovered evidence of a sewage leak in the premises.

This coincided with an inadequate level of cleaning and disinfection in particular to the structure, hand contact points and food equipment.

The court also heard that not only was their a failure to implement a food safety management system to ensure that all risks to food safety were adequately controlled but the operators did not  register their running of the food business with the Local Authority.

Besides being fined a total of £3,000 for the three food hygiene offences, Akay and Yildiz were also ordered to pay the Council’s costs of £1,600 and a victim surcharge of £30.

Pembrokeshire County Council spokesman, Len Mullins, said “It is essential that food business operators put in place effective management systems to ensure the safety of the food that they sell to customers.

“Keeping premises clean is a basic and essential requirement in running any food business and where the health of the public health is at risk of being compromised, the Authority will bring matters before the Court.”
