Mr Kala Beredugo, the owner of 35 Passfield Path, Thamesmead, appeared at Bexley Magistrates Court on 2 April 2012 and was fined £1,000 plus full costs of £933.

The house was occupied by five people, including a child, and the magistrate ruled that it lacked a proper fire warning system and safe means of escape in the event of a fire.

The magistrate also stated that the charge was extremely serious and endangered his tenants’ lives.

Councillor Maureen O’Mara, the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s cabinet member for community safety and enforcement, said: “The Royal Borough of Greenwich will seek to take the strongest action against those landlords who fail to maintain a safe home for their tenants.

“Tenants of houses in multiple occupation are amongst the most vulnerable groups of occupants as this type of accommodation can result in an unsafe environment leading to increased risk of fire.

“I urge both landlords and tenants to have a look the free advice provided by the Royal Borough to minimise the risks fire poses to multiple occupations.”

If you are a tenant who lives in a privately rented property in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and you share the house and its facilities with another family, the chances are it is a house in multiple occupation. This type of property must meet specific legal safety requirements.
