A Sheffield landlord who threw a tenant out onto the streets without his shoes when he failed to pay his rent on time has been jailed.

Sheffield City Council told theEHP:

“The Protection from Eviction Act makes it a criminal offence for a landlord to cause a tenant leave other than by following the right procedure. The Council is the prosecuting authority for these sorts of offences.

“In this case, Sheffield landlord Jay Allen, entered the room of tenant Chris Blades and, under cross examination accepted that when told by the tenant that he was entitled to notice, replied to the tenant ‘I don’t have to give you f*** all’ and made clear that he was going to disregard the proper legal process for evicting Mr Blades. Mr Allen accepted that he used foul and abusive language to the tenant and that he was going to start packing up his stuff.

“Mr Blades then alleges that he was forcibly evicted which is denied by the defendants.
However, the defendants do accept that there was an altercation, as a result of which, the tenant ended up outside his house.”

Councillor Harry Harpham, Cabinet Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods at Sheffield City Council said:

“Words can not express how disgusted I am to hear about this case. The only saving grace is that we have managed to take these bullies to task and they have been punished for their crimes.

“Landlords take note, we will not tolerate this kind of activity. We are committed to making sure that private renting offers a safe and desirable form of housing. This includes making sure that there is high standards and responsible management.

“One of the worst experiences a tenant can have when renting privately, is to be made to leave illegally.  We think believe that unlawful eviction can not be tolerated in a successful and responsible private rented sector.

“We have a very positive relationship with most private landlords in the City, who have good quality, safe properties and manage them well, but the actions of a minority of rogue landlords can affect the reputation of the sector as a whole.”
