Students are being reminded by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), about the importance of receiving the MMR and Men C vaccinations before they return to university campus, where outbreaks can occur. A leaflet is available on the HPA website, advising students on how to spot the early signs of these serious infections.

The Health Protection Agency’s annual conference, Health Protection 2011, held at the University of Warwick yesterday, revealed to delegates that raw bean sprouts were identified as the main vehicle of transmission in a national outbreak of Salmonella Bareilly food-poisoning.

A mobile X-ray unit, which identifies people with TB infection in hard to reach communities has proved a cost effective way of treating people with TB in London. These findings are published in the British Medical Journal and also presented at the HPA’s annual conference – Health Protection 2011 – at the University of Warwick on Wednesday 14th September 2011.

A patisserie owner whose shop was found to be filthy by Environmental Health Officers pleaded guilty to five charges under the Food Hygiene Regulations 2006 and was fined £2,100 at West London Magistrates’ Court 0n Wednesday 17 August and ordered to pay costs of £2,701 and a £15 victim surcharge.
