Newham could become the first borough in the country to license all private landlords. The east London council has just started a 10-week consultation. Councillors will then consider giving it the green light.
Two new task force teams are being set up in Newham to tackle the growing menace of ‘super sheds’ – ramshackle illegal buildings in gardens often housing people living in squalor.
A landlord and property owner were fined a total of £5,000, plus £660 costs and a victim surcharge of £30 for failing to comply with an improvement notice under s30 of the Housing Act 2004.
