Following a recent prosecution of a struck-off solicitor by Camden Council, we have been provided with a detailed case summary that shows just how complex housing prosecutions can be. This case summary (by consultant Michael Warren) includes advice for officers who are investigating or preparing HIMO prosecutions. Found an interesting article by Tenancy Relations Officer Ben Reeve-Lewis in Guardian Professional. Ben argues that criminal prosecutions are a poor deterrent in illegal eviction and harassment cases and Council resources can be better used supporting tenants in civil claims.

Newham councillors approved a pioneering scheme to licence all of its privately rented properties. This will cover an estimated 35,000 private tenancies (one in three of all the borough’s households). The scheme is due to come into force on January 1st 2013. This week at theEHP we report on a Looming housing crisis, a food safety reminder & lots of prosecutions.
Liverpool City Council has won a landmark tribunal ruling which could see heating costs cut for private tenants. The Council appealed a previous Residential Property Tribunal (RPT) decision that found that a heating system provided by a private landlord in Liverpool was satisfactory despite the fact that it is expensive compared to other heating systems.

This week at theEHP we report on a mandatory Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, suitability of homeless accommodation, cryptosporidiosis investigation, prosecutions & a RPT Decision.
The FSA has published its Annual Report of Incidents 2011. The report highlights that in 2011, 1,714 food incidents were investigated by the FSA, compared to 1,505 in 2010. This is a further increase on the 1,208 incidents reported in 2009. The report is available here.
