This week we have another iPhone App launch. Altremis have launched the Simple Accident Reporting App (SARA). SARA is one of the world’s first apps to be specifically designed to identify safety risks and reduce the number of employee injuries and deaths. More details about the App are available here. Food Safety: FSA research identifies listeria hot-spots
Certain process stages and regions in smoked fish processing plants appear to be more susceptible than others to persistent colonisation by Listeria monocytogenes, an FSA in Scotland (FSAS) literature survey has found. These regions include drains, skinning machines, brine injection units and fish slicers.

Housing: Council triumphs as court prosecutes landlords
Three landlords have been successfully prosecuted by Birmingham City Council following their failure to maintain a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO).
Housing: Landlord fined for appalling conditions at elderly lady’s flat
A private landlord has been fined £10,000 plus £3,364 costs, for failing to comply with improvement notices served by Camden Council on a building in Guilford St, Bloomsbury, Central London (Photos on Flickr).
Housing: Rogue Leeds landlord to pay £36,000 to student victims
In December 2009, Tariq Zaman was prosecuted by the Leeds City Council’s HMO (Houses in Multiple Occupation) Licensing Team for operating four licensable HMOs without a licence. Fines in excess of £10,000 were imposed for these offences. Subsequently his ‘fit and proper person’ status was removed and his HMO licences revoked.
Public Health
Public Health: Sutton Park warning after E. coli O157 Cases
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is working with Birmingham City Council to investigate seven confirmed cases of E. coli O157 in visitors to the Sutton Park in Sutton Coldfield in recent weeks.
Public Health: Outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in Costa Brava
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is aware of seven confirmed and one possible case of Legionnaires’ disease in people who have stayed or visited Blanes in Costa Brava. Cases are from Spain, the Netherlands and Latvia. The age range of the patients, who are all recovering, is from 48 to 82 years. There are no UK cases associated with this outbreak.

Sustainability: HPA – Climate change will mean increased health risks in the UK
Risks to public health in the UK from climate change are spelled out in a report published by the Health Protection Agency. The study, Health Effects of Climate Change in the UK 2012, is an extensive update of earlier reports published by the Department of Health.
