 National LA Enforcement Code

HSE has published the National Local Authority Enforcement Code. The code provides a list of sectors and activities suitable for proactive inspection by local authorities. This will see tens of thousands of businesses removed from health and safety inspections which are not justified on a risk basis, including most shops and offices. Read the full article here.

Environmental Protection: Hull business prosecuted for fly tipping
Hull City Council has successfully prosecuted a local business for fly tipping. A and J Clubb Limited (also known as Relax Nightclub) of 25 Spring Bank West, Hull were prosecuted at Hull Magistrates Court for four offences under section 34 of the Environmental protection Act 1990.

Environmental Protection: Northampton man’s rubbish costs him £660
A man from Northampton who dumped his rubbish off a main road in Rugby has been ordered to pay £660. In a prosecution brought by Rugby Borough Council, the court was told that Mr Catalin Gheorghiu of 5 Great Gull Crescent, Northampton, was seen throwing rubbish into a bush near the Elliott’s Field retail park on Leicester Road.

 

 

Food Safety

Food Safety: Saffron Restaurant Faces Heavy Fine For Food Hygiene Offences
Owner and manager of the Saffron Restaurant, 36 Union Street, Stowmarket appeared in court on the 30th May 2013 and were fined a total of £15,000 for food hygiene offences.

Food Safety: Whitby company prosecuted for safety and food hygiene offences
Scarborough Borough Council have prosecuted Harbour View Whitby Ltd, which operates Harbour View Restaurant on Baxtergate in Whitby.

Food Safety: Dirty pizza shop hit with food hygiene fine
A SWANSEA pizza restaurant has been served with a heavy fine for a string of food hygiene offences. Abbas Salami, owner of The Flying Pizza on Woodfield Road in Morriston, recently appeared in Swansea Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to nine food hygiene offences.

Health & Safety: New code curbs unnecessary safety checks
Local authorities are being banned from unnecessary health and safety inspections under a new code. The new National Local Authority Enforcement Code came into effect on Wednesday 29 May 2013.

Housing: Birmingham City Council mishandled homeless application
Birmingham City Council failed to deal with a homeless family properly meaning a woman and her four children had to live in a one-room Bed & Breakfast for over 4 months.

Housing: Camden shop owner fined for horror housing conditions
The owner of a chain of six shops in London has been fined £10,450 for the appalling housing conditions of his tenants above his shop, the Sunrise convenience store in Shaftesbury Avenue.

Public Health

Public Health: Shisha Lounge fined for smoking ban breach
The owner of a Harrow shisha lounge will have to pay out more than £10,000 after breaching the smoking ban.
