FSA has reported that approximately 70 people in south east England have reported symptoms consistent with diarrhetic shellfish poisoning. The cases have been linked to the consumption of mussels originating from a particular harvesting area in Shetland, Scotland. The area has been closed, and as a precautionary measure the industry has voluntarily suspended all commercial harvesting from the waters around Shetland until toxin levels subside. Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council seized noise making equipment from a flat in the Haldens area of Welwyn Garden City on Tuesday 16 July.
Environmental Protection: Guilty of 26 flytipping offences
At Redhill Magistrates’ Court, Mark Bryan, (trading as Edge Clearance Services) of Grenaby Avenue, Croydon CR0 2EG pleaded guilty to 26 offences relating to fly tipping. He was given three years conditional discharge and ordered to pay the Council’s clear up costs of £1500, as well as legal costs of £1170.

The Scottish Government has published its review of the lessons to be learned from the horsemeat incident.
Food Safety: Shellfish poisoning outbreak
Following detection by the FSA of unusually high levels of toxins, various shellfish harvesting sites in Scotland have been closed. These toxins, which occur naturally, especially during the summer months, can cause acute food poisoning.

On Tuesday 9 July 2013 Mr Fazir Khan and Mr Noor Ali, joint food business operators of The Bengal Restaurant, 72 High Street, Ramsey pleaded guilty to seven food hygiene offences at Huntingdon Magistrates Court, in a case brought by Huntingdonshire District Council.

An investigation by Havering Council led to a company being ordered to pay £25,000 in fines and costs for selling ‘pre-lit’ Christmas trees which proved to be unsafe.

Housing: Landlords exit local Housing Allowance market
According to the latest research* from the National Landlords Association (NLA), the number of landlords letting to tenants in receipt of local housing allowance (LHA) has fallen to 27 per cent, a seven per cent reduction since quarter one this year.

Norwich City Council was successful in prosecuting two landlords at Norwich Magistrates’ Court yesterday for putting tenants at risk.
