Oxford City Council is the first council in the country to introduce a HMO licensing scheme that covers the whole of its area and that requires every HMO to be licensed. It is estimated that this will involve licensing approximately 5000 properties in total. Read the full story here.

We have two Opinion articles for you this week. The first article by is Michael Eade of ENcentre. This article explains how environmental health departments can benefit from the use of email and multimedia resources. It provides examples of how video can be used as a first response or to convey key messages. There is a video embedded at the end of the article.

The second article is by Warren Fothergill of Group Safety Services. This article questions whether there is a need for a holistic safety passport for the renewable energy sector. Warren is inviting stakeholders to a meeting to determine the best way forward.

Food Safety: Biannual Public Attitudes Tracker results released by FSA
The Agency’s latest public attitudes tracker shows that the main food safety issue people continue to be concerned about is food hygiene when eating out. Other issues include food poisoning and the use of additives in food.

Food Safety: Indian restaurant fined for food hygiene offences
The owner of a Tandooi restaurant has been found guilty and fined £3,635 for nine separate food hygiene offences, at Basildon Magistrates Court on Wednesday 18 January (Photos on Flickr).

Food Safety: Pub manager guilty of food offences for 2nd time in a year
The former manager of a Stockton public house fell foul of food safety laws for the second time in a year. At the time of the offences, Helen Smallwood, aged 57, from Stockton, was manager of the Rimswell Hotel in Fairfield, which is now under new management and has no connection with her (Photos on Flickr).

Food Safety: Fine & community order for unhygenic pizza shop owner
Food hygiene offences cost the owner of a Stockton pizza shop more than £350 in costs and a community order for 160 hours of unpaid work following a successful prosecution by Stockton Council’s environmental health officers (Photos on Flickr).
