In November we reported on the successful prosecution of Sumal and Sons Properties Ltd by the London Borough of Newham. In this case a confiscation order of £6,450.83 was imposed under the Proceeds of Crime Act. The Court of Appeal have ruled that Local Authorities cannot use Part 2 of POCA 2002 to confiscate rental income from landlords who commit offences against section 95 (1) of the Housing Act 2004. A Westminster noise enforcement officer had a lucky escape when he went to the door of a party early on a Sunday morning – to be chased by a knife-wielding naked man who had drunk two litres of the powerful Greek spirit ouzo.

Housing: Newham landlord convicted of illegally evicting her tenant
Paulette Narine, 49, who was found by magistrates to be living at Maple Road, Penge, was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay a contribution of £1,500 towards prosecution costs together with a £15 victim surcharge. The District Judge awarded the ex-tenant £540 compensation.
Housing: Stoke-on-Trent to launch innovative scheme to bring empty homes back use
An innovative housing programme which will see empty homes renovated and brought back into use is expected to be rolled out across Stoke-on-Trent following city council cabinet approval later this month.
