A pair of unscrupulous landlords have been fined and ordered to pay costs of almost £9000 after Camden Council successfully prosecuted them for failing to license overcrowded student digs.
Camden Council has successfully prosecuted a landlord for failing to license a property she had divided into separate dwellings without installing safe fire exits and fire alarms.
Commenting on Newham Council’s proposals to introduce borough wide landlord licensing, David Salusbury, Chairman of the National Landlords Association said:
“It is deeply disappointing that the London Borough of Newham has taken the decision to license all landlords in its area….
Newham is to become the first borough in the country to apply licensing to all of its privately rented properties. Newham councillors approved this pioneering scheme at a Cabinet meeting on June 21st covering an estimated 35,000 private tenancies (one in three of all the borough’s households).
