1. Housing: RPT ruling could cut heating costs
Liverpool City Council has won a landmark tribunal ruling which could see heating costs cut for private tenants.The decision by the President of the Upper Tribunal (Lands Chamber) (UTLC) means that heating systems provided in private rented properties should be economical to run, if occupiers are to be adequately protected from the harmful effects of cold.
2. Health & Safety: Tesco to pay over £59,000 for two serious accidents
The action follows investigations of 2 serious accidents at the Tesco’s Beaumont Leys Store. The first involved a member of the public (Angela Pownall) being hit whilst shopping in the store, by a pallet truck that was being pulled by a Tesco’s employee. The second involved the main entrance door to the Petrol Filling Station collapsing on a Tesco’s employee (Linda Porter) when she opening up at the start of day. (Photos on Flickr)
3. Noise Nuisance App Launched
NoiseNuisance.org have just launched their first mobile phone application! The App, a collaborative effort by Encentre and Three Spires Acoustics, provides a useful logging tool for noise complainants and comes with a number of additional resources.

8. Food Safety: E.coli O157 outbreak in Belfast
The Food Standards Agency is reminding people across the UK of the importance of following good food hygiene practice, and what to do if they go down with food poisoning.
9. Food Safety: Letchworth hotel fined after food poisoning at wedding (updated 21-06-12)
A Letchworth hotel was ordered to pay over £12000 by Hertford Magistrates Court last week after pleading guilty to two charges of poor food hygiene practice. The court heard that the Letchworth Hall Hotel had served food at a wedding in September last year which led to multiple cases of food poisoning.
It is worth noting that the evidence gathered for the offence of “rendering food injurious to health” [s.7(1) FSA’90] was the cook temperature record for the pate and the epidemiological study undertaken by the Health Protection Agency – no pate was formally sampled.
10. Housing: Southend BC v Isaac Odeniran – Case Summary
The case of SBC v Isaac Odeniran went to Southend Magistrates Court on Friday 10th February 2012, Mr Isaac Odeniran of Parkmead, Loughton, was found guilty of failing to comply with an Improvement Notice and fined £4000 (out of a possible maximum fine of £5000). He was also ordered to pay the Council’s full costs (in excess of £4000) and a victim surcharge of £15. (By Paul Oatt)
