The popular Foundations in Law Series has been updated with Part 14: Regulations in housing law.

The 20th Edition of Clay’s Handbook of Environmental Health has launched. theEHP is now working with Amazon. Croydon is coming to terms with a night of unparalleled destruction and violence that has been inflicted on the borough by a mindless minority. A wave of looting and arson has destroyed businesses and wrecked communities and a huge manhunt to catch those responsible has been launched.

Food Safety: Landlady fined for not taking pub hygiene advice
A pub landlady who failed to carry out work to prevent a rodent infestation and meet hygiene standards has been fined over £2,000. Alice Holland, of the Rose and Crown pub, in Northiam Road, Beckley, had ignored environmental health officer’s advice.

A landlord has been ordered to pay £42,000 for keeping his properties in a dangerous condition (Photos Below).

New fire safety guidance for blocks of flats has been launched to help keep residents safe. Despite nearly a quarter of all housing fire deaths in England taking place in apartments, until now there has been no comprehensive document on how to best manage risks in such buildings.

RPT Decision: Rent Repayment Order (CAM/00KA/HMA/2011/0003)
Respondent: David Westcott

Applicants: Leia Davies, Deanne Siew-Stevens, Symone Fordyce, Kayleigh Dickson & Naydean Osman

This case involves an Application for a Rent Repayment Order made by 5 Tenants. The Eastern Panel found that the Respondent was not the “appropriate person” and therefore cannot make a Rent Repayment Order against the Landlord.

Respondent: London Borough of Islington

This case involves an Appeal against an Improvement Notice served by London Borough of Islington. The London Panel varied the Improvement Notice.

RPT Decision: Emergency Remedial Action Appeal (LON/OOAS/HER/2011/001)
Respondent: The Mayor and Burgesses of the London Borough of Hillingdon

Applicants: Mr & Mrs Doherty

This case relates to an Appeal against a Notice of Emergency Remedial Action made by London Borough of Hillingdon. The London Panel confirmed the service of this notice.

RPT Decision: Rent Repayment Order (BIR/00CN/HMA/2011/0003)
Respondent: Muhammed Ali Esq

Applicants: Ms Claire Horgan & Ms Hannah O’Connor

This case relates to an Application for a Rent Repayment Order made by 2 tenants. The Midland Panel ordered that the Respondent repay each Tenant £562.00.

RPT Decision: Improvement Notice Appeal (LON/00AR/HIN/2011/0013)
Respondent: London Borough of Havering

Applicants: Robert J Stevens

This decision relates to an Appeal against an Improvement Notice served by London Borough of Havering. The Local Authority informed the Tribunal that they revoked the Improvement Notice and the Appellant then went on to seek reimbursement of fee’s paid to the Tribunal. The Tribunal made the determination not to reimburse the Application fee.
