Debt charity Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) have published their annual Statistical Yearbook. The report found that households are working hard to cut spending and reduce their debts, but they are ‘swimming against a tide’ of falling real incomes and the high cost of living. One of the main findings of the report is that those living in rented accommodation have been most severely affected by the economic downturn. The full report is available here. Saint Gobain Building Distribution Ltd owns and operates the site at 226 Dallow Road in Luton and, trading as Gibbs and Dandy, pleaded guilty to offences under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and the Workplace (Health Safety & Welfare) Regulations 1992 at Luton Magistrates Court on 23 February.

Article by Tessa Shepperson – When the new tenancy deposit schemes were ushered in, one of the benefits trumpeted was that they would have a free, quick and easy arbitration (or adjudication) scheme to deal with disputes over deposits.

A landlord has been found guilty of flouting housing regulations and fined more than £4000 following an investigation by Hillingdon Council.

Housing: Landlord fined £10,000 following fatal fire
Following a fatal fire on 29 April 2011 at 546 Coldhams Lane, the landlord Darius Valiulis of Neville Road Cambridge, was prosecuted by Cambridge City Council for breaches of the Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation Regulations 2006, and fined a total of £10,000 plus £6,000 costs. Mr Valiulis admitted that he owned another three rental properties, which have now been inspected by council officers.

Public Health: Shisha café fined for breaking smoke free laws
Amrud Gulam and Imran Khan of La Sheesh at 15 Windsor Street in Luton were found guilty by Luton Magistrates Court on 6 February for failing to prevent smoking in a smoke free place and failing to display an A5 sign at the entrance of the premises.

Sustainability

Sustainability: DEFRA publish UK carbon footprint figures
Defra has published official figures for annual UK carbon footprint for the years 1990 to 2009. It describes carbon dioxide emissions relating to goods and services produced by UK business and consumed by UK residents, and those emissions relating to imported goods. The release also provides new estimates of emissions of total greenhouse gases associated with UK consumption.
