Oxford City Council have provided an update on their groundbreaking new powers for licensing every houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) in the city. They have received 1803 applications, taken 8 prosecutions, issued  a formal caution and sent out over 2,000 warning letters. Full details here.

Food Safety: More than 200 local authorities have joined the FHRS
Over the past few days a number of local authorities in Warwickshire and other areas in England have rolled out the Agency’s Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. This means there are now more than 200 local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland publishing more than 180,000 food hygiene ratings at food.gov.uk/ratings.

Housing: Landlord prosecuted for putting tenants’ lives at risk
A woman who owns a number of properties in Basildon which she rents to vulnerable families has been given community service for failing to keep their gas appliances well maintained and safe.

Housing: Oxford HIMO Licensing Update
Since the start of their new HMO Licensing Scheme Oxford City Council have received 1803 applications, with 1065 being received since the 1st January 2012. To put this into context, from 1st April 2006 to 23rd January 2011 they received a total of 658 applications.

Housing: London rents unaffordable
Renting a two-bedroom home in London is unaffordable for families earning less than £52,000, Shelter has revealed today. Almost one in four London families now rents from a private landlord – an increase of 70 per cent in the past two years.

Housing: Southend BC v Isaac Odeniran – Case Summary
The case of SBC v Isaac Odeniran went to Southend Magistrates Court on Friday 10th February 2012, Mr Isaac Odeniran of Parkmead, Loughton, was found guilty of failing to comply with an Improvement Notice and fined £4000 (out of a possible maximum fine of £5000). He was also ordered to pay the Council’s full costs (in excess of £4000) and a victim surcharge of £15. (By Paul Oatt)

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is reminding people to be ‘tick aware’ this year and take sensible precautions to reduce their risk of Lyme disease, as Tick Bite Prevention Week (26 March – 1 April) begins.

RPT Decision: Prohibition Order Appeal (MAN/32UC/HPO/2011/0006)

Respondent: East Lindsey District Council
Applicants: Malcolm Mason & Deborah Anne Williamson
Subject Property: Maypole House, 82 West Street, Horncastle, Lincolnshire, LN9 5AE

This case involves an Appeal against a Prohibition Order served by East Lindsey District Council.
The Northern panel allowed the appeal in part by ordering that the Prohibition Order be suspended for a period.

RPT Decision: Overcrowding Notice Appeal (Not Provided)

Respondent: Reading Borough Council
Applicants: Justine Davies
Subject Property: 82 Waldeck Street, Reading, RG1 2RE
This case involves an Appeal against an Overcrowding Notice made by Reading Borough Council.

The Eastern panel varied the Overcrowding Notice relating to one bedroom, and upheld the rest of the Notice.
