According to a survey carried out by online tenant community ‘The Tenants’ Voice’, a third of tenants who have been evicted, or threatened with eviction, have been put in this position after making a complaint to their landlords about the condition of a property, or after asking for repairs to be carried out. The survey found that:

• 71% of tenants have paid for repairs themselves rather than ask their landlords
• 61% of tenants are wary about complaining to their landlords
• Damp is the number one complaint from 59% of tenants

As a result of the fear of Retaliatory Evictions, more than half of renters admit they are living with an ongoing issue they’d like resolved, but prefer to live with the problem rather than ask their landlords to sort it out. You can rear the full article here.

Food Safety: Fine for takeaway that didn’t have hygiene on the menu
A Leeds takeaway has been issued a hefty fine for food safety offences after an unsuspecting customer found a cockroach in their pizza.

Food Safety: Hove takeaway fined
On Tuesday, 27 August at Brighton Magistrates Court Mr Muharrem Kartal, aged 47, owner of Golden Fried Chicken, 22 Church Road, Hove, pleaded guilty to 17 counts of failing to comply with food hygiene regulations on the 15th and 25th January, 2013 and failing to improve after repeated visits and advice from the council’s food safety team.

Food Safety: Clubbers takeaway fined for mouse infestation
A Hull takeaway popular with revellers using the Welly Club, Beverley Road has been prosecuted by Hull City Council for food safety offences including extensive mouse activity in the kitchen and storage areas.

Food Safety: Chicken shop fined for flouting food safety laws
The owner of Flavour Chicken in South Street, Romford, has been hit in the pocket after admitting nine food safety offences, despite several warnings to clean up his act.

A new collaborative study, from Public Health England (PHE) and parenting club, Bounty, found infants have little contact with adolescents and spend more time with their mothers than anyone else, providing valuable information on the best strategies to protect this age group from infections.

Public Health: Where there’s muck there’s bugs
A study by Public Health England (PHE) has found that use of interactive lesson plans significantly improved pupils’ knowledge of bugs and why hand hygiene is important in a farm setting with 80 per cent of children correctly answering questions after the intervention.

Public Health: Waltham Forest wins landmark case for spitting
A campaign by Waltham Forest Council to hold people to account for spitting in the street was put to the test for the first time. Thames Magistrates Court found two individuals guilty after the Council prosecuted them using the same powers used to enforce against litter – endorsing their decision and opening the way for other councils to follow suit.​

Public Health: Brent shisha cafe fined for permitting smoking
The owner of a cafe called Arabian Night Moon Light was found guilty of permitting the smoking of shisha in a smoke-free area at Willesden Magistrates Court on 3 September.
